Paseante Noir... yes, that one. What is it? It’s the future of viticulture.
Paseante Noir is a cross between native American Vitis arizonica, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This unique lineage gives the variety natural resistance to Pierce’s Disease—a deadly grapevine illness spread by insects, which has wreaked havoc across the Hill Country.
This particular Lake Travis vineyard was originally planted to Lenoir, and over the course of two years has been bud-grafted with Paseante Noir vines.
The resulting wine is bold and expressive, with notes of spicy black fruits, cedar, and clove. This is an extremely limited first bottling from the vineyard, but there’s much more to come as the newly grafted vines reach full production.
For those who love to cellar wines, this is a standout. While it tastes fantastic now, it has tremendous aging potential—likely over 10 years under proper conditions.
